What would cause just one tire to be so hot we can barely touch the inside of the wheel & give off a powerful burning smell that is hanging on long after the car has been shut off? Was fine yesterday.

Check the barke caliper and brake hose on that side.

I had the same problem with my dakota. The caliper is not working properly, the rubber boot around the piston or caliper is probably shot and in need of replacement. The smell that you have is the brake pad wearing on the rortor causing the hot wheel. It is simple to replace and not very costly either.
