Why is my Dodge Caravan making a whining noise?

I have a 2001 dodge Grand Caravan, with a little over87,000. The other day when I was driving home from the store I noticed that when I pressed on the gas pedal it made a whining noise (more like when you let the air out of a baloon slowely). The harder I pressed the gas the louder the sound. My husband thinks it could be the transmission? I was hoping it was the transmission filter is clogged or the belts need to be changed. Any Ideas?

Maybe this will help. I own a 2002 Dodge Caravan Sport and at one time (@ 73,000 mls) it was making a whining noise that seemed to go higher in pitch when ever acceleration occurred (park/neutral/drive). It turned out to be my water pump. It was found to be leaking during other repair service. Once replaced, the noise disappeared.
