Gas gauge (and "miles to empty" overhead console) acts erratically, i.E, gauge drops rapidly, warning light comes on, gauge may begin to climb again.

Chances are there is a problem with the float rheostat. It is the device (part of the fuel pump) that floats on the fuel on the tank and through the rheostat sends a signal for the fuel gauge. We had one that if the tank was full, the gauge would drop to empty, the alarm would ding, and then after a certain mileage, it would start to work. Then it would start all over again. The bad part is it is part of the fuel pump (expensive) and the fuel tank needs removed to replace it.
