REAR BRAKE SHOES (DRUM BRAKES)
Removal
Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel. Remove access plug from inside of brake backing plate for access to star wheel on automatic adjuster assembly.
Using small screwdriver, hold adjuster lever away from star wheel on automatic adjuster assembly. Using brake adjuster, rotate star wheel until rear wheel spins freely with no brake drag. Brake adjuster must be moved downward to back off star wheel. Remove rear brake drum.
NOTE:Proper procedure must be followed to obtain slack in parking brake rear cables for servicing of rear brake shoes.

Slack must be obtained in parking brake cables. Ensure parking brake pedal is in released position. Pull parking brake front cable down and rearward at exposed area on cable. To maintain slack in parking brake front cable, install locking pliers on parking brake cable just behind rear body bracket. See Fig.1 .
Remove adjuster lever spring. See Fig. 2 . Remove adjuster lever from leading brake shoe. Remove lower return spring. Remove tension clip attaching upper return spring to automatic adjuster assembly. Tension clip is located just below wheel cylinder.
Remove upper return spring. Remove hold-down clip and pin from trailing brake shoe. Remove trailing brake shoe from backing plate, parking brake actuating strut and parking brake actuating lever.
Remove automatic adjuster assembly from leading brake shoe. Remove hold-down clip and pin from leading brake shoe. Remove leading brake shoe. Remove parking brake actuating lever from trailing brake shoe (if necessary).
