Check the coolant level when the car is cold in both raditor and overflow. The coolant level is droping when you turn the heat on. This in turn causes the coolant to drop. The temperature sending unit is no longer making contact with the coolant due to the drop, causing the gauge to read incorrectly. Try topping it off and Good luck.
