1996 Dodge Caravan Acts like it is out of gas

1996 Dodge Caravan Automatic 144000 miles

We just bought a used car a few days ago, we looked over the car as much as we could. Took it for a test drive and drove really well. As soon as I got title in hand I was driving down the road and it seemed like it ran out of gas. Once the RPM's went down to zero I was able to go again. Since then it has happened 3 times. When it acts like there is no gas the RPM's increase. I have to change gears and put it back in drive for it to work.

Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Has the check engine light come on?

no we haven't checked fuel pump pressure. How do you do that? The check engine light has not come on.
