Hello Everyone,

I have a 1991 caravan cargo van with 110,000 miles that I use for my business. Last fall I had planned on replacing it with a newer used van. After going to several dealerships I was shocked to find the average mileage on used cargo vans was between 90,000 and 150,000 with an average price tag between $7,500 – $9,900.

To make a long story short, I decided I was far better off to refurbish my current van than to buy any of the junk that I saw on the lots.

Where do I start? What maintenance should I have done?

Here are some of the existing problems:
A/C is not working.
Temp gauge sensor not working
Speedometer sensor intermediate.
Fuel gauge sensor intermediate.

Outside of these problems, the van runs fine. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Paul

Hi:
First, start with an oil change and service. Have them inspect the van to see if there are any major things you don't know about. After that, the AC may just be low on freon, so have that checked. Also, the temp sending unit sounds bad. Have it replaced. Finally, the fuel gauge may have a problem with the float. The only problem is it's part of the fuel punp in the tank. So, it may need replaced.

Let me know what you find or if you have any other questions. Also, I agree with your decision. You have no idea what you are buying. (Buyer Beware)
