I recently purchased this car and I am going to do a tune up on it. Does the distributor necessarily need to be changed if the vehicle is running okay?

No, just spark plugs, a cap and rotor, maybe spark plugs wires, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve and if the ignition timing is adjustable, check to make sure it is set to spec on your under-hood label.
