The steering on my car got very difficult to turn anything more than 45 degrees in both directions (I pulled a muscle in my chest doing a hard turn a few times). I replaced the power steering pump and it’s worlds better, especially on hard left turns. But hard right turns are still a bit difficult (although not muscle pulling difficult).

It’s like it will be difficult up to a certain point, then it will “break free” on the last bit of the hard right turn. If I turn it all the way right then go back left it’s very easy, it’s like it’s only hard going to the right and not going back the other direction.

Hi,

I have to be honest. It sounds like the rack and pinion steering gear is bad. Does it do it all the time? Is it something that is affected by temperature or doesn't that matter? Does it change after being driven?

Let me know.

Joe

It is easier at faster speeds, and I think it may be getting better the more I drive it. My neighbor (who used to be a mechanic) seems to think that since the car sat for a few years before I got it, that it may just need to be “worked in”. That and it’s just “old”.

I haven’t drove the car in really cold or really hot weather, only around 40-50F.

Hi,

It could be what your neighbor mentioned, but it shouldn't take too long for it to loosen. You replaced the pump. Is the new fluid you installed still clean and in good condition. If it looks dirty, you may want to flush the system. Here is a link that shows how it's done:

Let me know.

The fluid looks about the same as it did when we filled it up. If it doesn’t get much better with more driving, I’ll flush the system just to be safe.

That sounds like a good idea. If you could, please let me know the outcome. I'm interested in knowing.

I hope the rack and pinion is good. I remember years back, there were bushings that would fail and then they would bind. If you look where the inner tie rod goes into the rack (at the boot on each side), see if there is any evidence of fluid. You may have to gently pry the boot open to confirm.

I attached a pic of the rack and highlighted where to check.

Let me know.

I’ve driven it some more, I think it’s about as good as it’s going to get for now. Right turns are a bit tight still but it breaks loose eventually, left turns now hit a “bump” sometimes and have to break loose as well but not all the time going left.

What’s weird is that I was backing up to the right and it was smooth as ever, then turning back left was hard. Go figure.

Haven’t had a chance to check those deals due to rain, but I’m thinking the rack may be going out as you suggested, unless you can think of anything else.

Hi,

I have to be honest. I really feel the rack and pinion is bad. If you decide to replace it, here are the directions. Also, if you check places like Rockauto. Com, you may find it isn't an expensive part.

The attached pics correlate with the directions.
