Waiting for the rear cylinder head to get back from machine shop, I finally found out it is cracked, and not usable. So, while searching for another replacement, an idea formed about 3.4 and 3.1 v6 interchanging a 3.4 rear head for the cracked one that I have from a 05 Impala. What changes need to be made to make it work? Or would it be easier to swap the engine complete and would the transmission match with the malibu's? The other option which doesn't sound horrible but would hit my pockets is a new cylinder head to replace the cracked one. Please help me figure out what would be the best option?

Here is what is said about the cylinder head compatibility:

it's important to note that the 3.4L and 3.1L V6 engines have different cylinder head designs, so swapping a 3.4L rear head onto a 3.1L engine may require significant modifications to the engine block, including drilling and tapping new bolt holes and potentially modifying the coolant passages.

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.
