Noise in the front left wheel, possible CV Joint?

My truck started making a clunking noise 2 days ago in the front left tire. I don’t really notice it in relation to braking or accelerating, it just seems to happen somewhat randomly either braking or accelerating or driving normally. Definitely notice it when the truck shifts as in going over a bump or rough road. Last time I took it in a few months ago I was told the CV joint in that tire had “a lot of play” and recommended replacing it soon.

Would this be a good guess at the cause of the noise? Would it be a hard job for someone with no mechanical experience? Would I need specialty tools? The videos I’ve watched don’t make it look crazy hard, but could I be getting in over my head, and save the headache and take it to a pro?

I would love to learn to work on my truck but again, have no experience and not a ton of tools. Thanks for any advice.

Oh, and if you don’t think it would be caused by CV joint, what other suggestions do you have?

Hi,

Often times a CV joint will make a clicking sound when making a sharp turn. Have you noticed that at all? I'm curious because you indicated it makes the sound over bumps. To me, that sounds more like a suspension noise such as a broken or weak shock, ball joint, and so on. Have you checked any of those things?

As far as a CV joint/axle replacement, it really isn't too hard. It does require a few special tools, but not many. Keep in mind, most parts stores will lend you tools. What they do oftentimes they charge you for the tool and then refund you when it's returned.

First, here is a link that shows how it's done in general. You can use this as a guide.

As far as doing it, if you take your time and follow the directions, you should be fine. But, you have to be comfortable doing it. I will be here to help as much as I can.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care and God Bless,

Joe
