I recently had to change my transmission, fuel pump, plugs, wires, and ignition coils... My vehicle will attempt to start but won’t start. An unlicensed backyard guy said that he thinks I’m not getting a spark, but doing some research online is leading me to believe that the crankshaft position sensor is bad. Any suggestions?

Hi,

If the crankshaft position sensor has failed, you won't have spark to the plugs. So, try this.

See if the engine starts for a couple of seconds using starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know its fuel related. If there is no change, then suspect spark.

Here is a link that explains how to check for spark to the plugs. Do this if needed.

Also, here is a link that describes the most common symptoms of a failing crankshaft position sensor. Take a look through it and let me know if you feel it mirrors what you are experiencing.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Crank but no start; new ignition coils, plugs, wires, and fuel pump. Took to get check engine light fixed and got code p0308 misfire cylinder 8. Would this be a combination of EGR valve, crankshaft sensor, and PCM? Not getting any kind of spark other but plugs, coils, and wires are fine. The fuel pump relay tested and that is fine. Cylinder 8 is the issue. Please help!

Hi,

If it was an EGR leak, it wouldn't be limited to only a cylinder 8 issue. You would likely have a multiple-cylinder misfire. Is it only a cylinder 8 issue? If it is, the engine should still run but would have a misfire. Is it starting at all now?

If you have no spark to any of the spark plugs, then my first suspect would be a crankshaft position sensor. That is where I would start.

Let me know me know your thoughts.

Joe
