Could a bad ground cause an ignition coil to fail

The coil was sparking to the body and there was not any bolts on the coil bracket for the ground. Could this cause the coil to fail?

Yep, the coil can overload and heat up causing the coil to fail. Here is a video and some diagrams (Below) that will help you get the job done.
