I have the vehicle listed above ser, VIN# 423ZK3BB4FUO73765. Over the summer the car developed a problem starting when cold in the morning. The car would crank for about 20-30 seconds before finally reluctantly starting. Once started she would run and start normally except for a little hesitation when moving from a complete stop such as a red light. Now that it is colder out, she won’t start at all. I’ve read online that the car is equipped with a cold starting injector or solenoid (not sure which it has) and I’m guessing that’s my problem. Can you tell me how to check the part before I buy a new one? (The part is $200.00 and non-returnable) The only other potential culprit is the spark plugs which I am going to replace anyway, but if they are the cause of the slow start, I assume I would have other performance issues and I do not.

Hi,

This model year, there isn't a cold start solenoid. Toyota used them years ago, but I haven't seen one on anything this new. I could be wrong, but there is nothing listed in the service manual indicating one as well.

The coolant temperature sensor is what signals the computer temperature. With that information, the computer determines how rich or lean to make the fuel mixture for an easy start and then running. Has the check engine light turned and stayed on while the engine is running?

What should be done, and it's simple, is to use a live data scan tool to check the temperature signal from the sensor before starting the vehicle. It should be very close to ambient temperatures.

I attached a pic below showing the location of the sensor. It may be a good idea to disconnect the electrical connector and make sure there is no corrosion or damage to it.

Let me know what I can do to help or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
