I was told that the mechanic can probably send the part back to the supplier and get reimbursed. So I was hoping he would reimburse me.

Yeah. If he is going to send it back then he should give you that money back because he doesn't pay for the parts. He checks charged by the supplier and then just transfers that cost to you. So he is just the middle man. That reimbursement is technically yours.
