The car does not register what gear I am in?

When driving my car and changing into the correct gear for the speed I'm doing, it seems the car doesn't register what gear I'm in (it will tell me to change gear on dash even though I'm already in that gear) and then proceeds to over rev without gaining speed.

It sounds like the transmission range switch is not working correctly. Here are the instructions and the location of the switch so you can change it out or see what needs to be done to fix it. Check out the images (below). Please upload pictures or videos of the problem so we can see what's going on.
