I have a 95 golf that I recently bought. When I got it, gauges worked except rpm's didnt and from time to time had to slap the dash to make mph work again. Then I noticed the odometer wasnt registering most of the miles I drove so that was working intermittently. But the other day all the gauges went out. Temp, gas, mph. The whole cluster. Not sure where to turn next. Been reading about clusters going out. Is there any way to test to see if its the cluster before I drop 100 bucks on a new one? Also, my fuse panelcover is missing so I dont know what fuse is what and cant find one on the net. Its a stickshift and I beleive its the 1.8. (Might be a 6, I dont remember)

I don't have a schematic of the fuse box. Have you checked to make sure none of the fuses are blown? Also, check under the hood for bad fuses. As far as checking the cluster, make sure everything is tight behind it (wiring). If it is, the cluster needs to be removed to have it checked. If you can get a new one for $100.00, that may be your best bet.

No fuses under the hood.

Most likely a fault with the cluster.

There's a guy who can repair the cluster... you can find him in Bentley VW A3 Forum:

Search the forum to find "cluster repair".

BobD is the who I'm thinking of... sample thread:
