I have just moved to tennessee and they require an emissions test. My van failed for
P0442 and P0455
my service engine light was on. After it failed I stopped at a service shop and they said that I should get a gas cap from a dealer and see if that fixes the problem. Today I drove a bazillion miles to a dealer and bought a new cap and put it on. Will the service engine light go out automatically if that was the problem or does it need to be cleared? If it just needs to be cleared is that something that I can do myself?

thank you
evelyn

The code would need to be cleared. You can try and disconnect the battery. This will reset the light, but the code will still be stored on history

Thank you so much for your rapid response!
If the light is cleared but it still shows up in history would I then still fail the emissions test even if I replaced the gas cap with factory replacement or would I only fail if the gas cap didn't fix the problem? Or if the gas cap doesn't fix the problem would the light just come back on again letting me know that I still have a problem?

The code would need to be cleared. Just to be sure I would go to an autoparts store have them clear the code (most auto parts stores do this as a courtesy) Then go straight to the emission center just in case the code does come back later.
