I have a 2002 town and country and I am having some transmission problems. This is what is happening. Today I put the van in reverse and the van was hard to move. I had to give it a lot gas to make it move and when it did move it chuged. It did the same in forward. It almost acts like it wants to go in forward and reverse at the same time. The car is in my driveway on an incline. If I put the van in neutral the van will not move. If I turn off the van it rolls freely. Do you have any ideas.

Check tranny fluid and if all OK
you need the help of tranny shop
it sound as if the transaxle is failing
you should have it checked before it put a hole in the tranny housing

If the pinion pin was walking out and hitting the side of the case it would happen all the time. If I shut the van off with it in gear it will roll freely no noise or chuging. I think I have broken a pinion in the plantary gear set.

Chances are the rear planetary gears are grinded up. I'm telling you, transmissions need to be serviced. Gotta use the Mopar ATF+4, for sure, on these. It will go into neutral and you can push it or get it to where you'll be rebuilding the trans. Here's a picture of exactly what happens. A plus, these transmissions are common and cheap to fix. (41TE) I picked up the entire gear train (which includes the planets) for about $100. May as well replace all the clutches too while you're in there. The rebuild kit for these are around $150. Don't dream and think that it can be fixed with love or a trans fluid change.
