We drove for about 45 minutes, parked, the van smoked alittle (2 sec). The Heat level was fine. We went in an establishment for about 4 hours. When we drove home we didn't have any heat. Do you know what that could be?

First I want you to check your coolant level and make sure it is a proper level, then you will need to check/replace the thermostat and refill coolant properly to get any air pockets out.
