I have a 2001 PT Cruiser 2.0 Touring Auto. Low 23,000 miles.

Showing the Limp light and error code P0700.

No warning of a fault, no loss of fluid, ATF looks OK, no smells. Drive and Reverse function, but in limp mode (ie 1st & 2nd gear only).

Dealer cannot offer any advice on this code saying that it could be anything! No other error codes showing. Recommendation is to replace the transmission - anticipating that this will resolve the problem. Sounds like a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Any advice urgently needed. I can't believe a transmission can just fail after 23000 miles.

Disparately seeking support

P0700 is the Transmission control system computer has a problem and may need to be replaced. Some repair garages will have the programming equipment needed to do this job. If not you must go to the dealer. Call them before you go. You should do a pin to pin check before replacing it though.

Here is a guide that will help you.
