The most common way to check a CV joint is to simply turn the steering wheel all the way left or right. Allow the car to drive in a circle. If you have a bad joint, you will hear a clicking sound from the front. Keep in mind, this doesn't have anything to do with a bad CV boot. However a bad boot will eventually lead to a bad joint.
