While leaving work today I accelerated too fast and RPMs went to about 6000. While this happened, the speedometer needle dropped to 0 then back up to speed. The car continued to drive but it kept jerking back and forth and the engine light came on. I pulled over, turned off my car, then turned it back on. I continued driving home and all seemed fine although the engine light was on. I'm worried that it could be something serious. Any ideas?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine manangement system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

Several people suggested that it might be a blown head gasket but there is no sign of anti-freeze in my oil so I'm not sure. I may just need to bring it to a shop and get it checked out.

At no time you've mentioned overheating but if it is get it block and pressue tested to rule out the headgasket and cracked head or block
