Computer problem
1998 Chrysler Intrepid 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 249km miles

Hi there. As preventetive maitainance I wanted to do the timing belt as the car has 249,300 kms I changed the belt and made 100% sure that I did not disturb the timing once in position to have the three timing marks lined up. After reassembly a no start. I have check the cam sensor for voltage from the plug and there was 5 volts and when I back probed the plug at the cam sensor and hand cranked the cam sensor showed the needle on an anolg meter to jump. I then saw the crank sensor was coated in oil so I removed the plug, cleaned the plug and replaed the crank sensor with a new one, still no spark. There is supposed to be 12v at the green wire at each coil with key in the run position, nothing. All connections look good I have checked relays, bench tested them etc. I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank-you very much. Bill

The voltage you're looking for at the coils comes from the Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay. That relay turns on two times. First is for two seconds when you turn the ignition switch to "Run". It turns on again when the engine computer sees engine rotation, (cranking or running).

The signals from the cam and crankshaft position sensors tells the computer the engine is rotating. When you installed the new crank sensor, was there a thick paper spacer on the end of it? That spacer sets the air gap which is critical. With no spacer, the end of the sensor could be damaged by the notches in the flywheel. If the gap is too big, no signal will be produced.

The ASD relay also sends voltage to the fuel pump or relay, injectors, and alternator field terminal.
