You will see battery light and (sometimes) brake light on your dash when the engine is running.

Exactly, what your is your car? There is no such thing as 1990 Chrysler Cirrus.

My car is a New Yorker or Fifth Avenue. The check engine light comes on every other or two days and the car will jerk as if it wants to die out. If I come to a complete stop after that, the car dies out but starts up right away with no problem. This started last Monday, then it was fine Tuesday and Wednesday and did it again Thursday. Then it was fine until Sunday. It has not done that since then.

Is there any other way to check if it's the alternator?

I don't believe that it is your alternator. Bad alternator does not send signal for your check engine light to come on. If the battery light in the gauge cluster is not on, your alternator is OK.

You can go to any auto parts store (Autozone, Checkers, Kragen, Advance, whichever in your area), they can test your alternator for free. Or you can do this yourself. You have to have a voltmeter, though. With the engine running, touch the test probes to your battery. If it is showing more than 13 but less than 15.9 volts, your alternator is good.
