A call from my wife stated when she tried to start the car she heard a loud bang and then no response from turning the key. Preliminary check indicated very low voltage in the battery. I hooked up a trickle charger in the engine compartment. The battery if low on charge should have been pulling at least 8-10 amps from the charger. Only 2 amps. Upon exposing the battery in the trunk I found both battery caps off and acid all over the bottom side of the fabric cover and in the tray and well. This could account for the bang noise she heard. My concern is the root cause. High amperage short? Or possibly just a bad battery? I am afraid to even charge it back up without knowing more. Any ideas on how to approach a diagnosis safely.
Thanks

Hi there,

I would re charge the battery and get a load test done, but I feel that the battery will be faulty, you will have to wash the boot out and use plenty of Bi-Carb as this will neutralize the acid that has been split, also check the alternator charge rate for over charging as well.
