The thermostat is located under the throttle body intake hose. All the books I have read suggest taking off the exhaust crossover pipe to do this job.

I do not. I use a 1/4 inch drive socket set with extensions and metric sockets. This gives ample room to manuver around the pipe to loosen bolts.

Remove the intake hose assembly and unplug any wiring harnesses that might be in your way. Remove the air cleaner box if you need elbow room. Drain radiator enough to prevent coolant loss.

Loosen the bolts and remove the front bolts but leave the back bolt still in the threads but very loose as it has a slot that allows it to rotate and then remove the housing and thermostat.

The gasket is a rubber ring that attaches to the outside perimeter of the thermostat.
