I was told by the shop foreman during my recent tune-up that there were no meaningful advantages to using "Platinum" spark plugs and no meaningful advantages to using 100% "Synthetic" motor oil. I was told it was just a way for the auto industry to charge extra for these common things. The science sounds convincing to me that they would be beneficial, so now I'm confused. Should I go back to the basic stuff?

Here's my experience, platinum plugs lasted 60.000 miles on my bird with no wear on them. Synthetic oils I personally love, the advatages of using syn is that the oil doesn't break down as easily and does save some wear on the engine internally. My advice, run if you can afford it, just remember when it comes to oil, contmination is whats bad to the engine, synthetic or conventional, on time oil changes is more important than what you run.
