1976 Chevy Van strong exhaust smell

1976 Chevy Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

i replaced the stock 250 6 cyl. W/ a rebuilt 69 327. The 6 was equiped with an egr valve. But 69 v-8 did not, so I didn't install one. Could this be causing the strong exhaust smell or is there something else I should look for?

Could be running rich due to the following

1. Fuel pressure not within specs. Can be cause by restricted fuel return line or defective fuel pressure regulator.
2. Defective Oxygen Sensors.
3. Leaking injectors.
4. Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
5. Restricted air intake system.
6. Check the exhaust system
