Brake lights

I have a 1998 chevy 1500 extended cab v6 5spd
it has 160000 miles on it and the brake lights dont always work I replaced the stop light switch and still
dont work all the time if you press lightly on the pedal they do not work but if you press hard the work.
the switch is not adjustable, what else could be wrong

The brake light switch should activate the moment you first move the brake pedal. Listen for the click when its first moved. If there's no way to adjust it, it may be the wrong one.

Also check to see if the brake pedal and lever are not streching or touching other wires or wiring harrnesses in the area. That could cause a short and by pressing hard your reconnecting the circut thats been damaged. Hold the pedal down slightly and wiggle things around while someone watches the brake lights for you.
