my brakes are mushy and it sounds like they are sucking air when the peddle is held down

This could be the vacuum booster leaking and/or the master cylinder is going bad. Have a pro look at this soon.

Check the vaccum line going to the booster if it is good then the booster is probably bad and that is why you hear the sucking sound you are loosing vaccum. This can also make your vehicle run badly.
