My 1989 chevy 4x4 gets a real bad vibration about 40 mph and up in 2 wheel drive. I know it not in the motor because if you put it in neutral it stops vibrating. Is there a way to tell if it might be the transfercase, transmission or rear diffiiretial

Vibrations like the one you described are usually u-joint related. Check your u-joints and your pinion bearing for any play. Also check your tires. An unballanced tire or excessive mud or dirt build up on the wheel (usually on the inner portion of the wheel) can cause a vibration. Keep me posted.
