Every so often for the past 4+ months, there has been a strange smell coming through the inside vents of my car. It smells like a hair perm solution, believe it or not! My father immediately suspected that it is an antifreeze smell, but when I smelled a container of antifreeze, I can't say it smalled like that. I'm having difficulty with my air conditioner and coincidentally, it's been going on for as long as the smell.

Also, when I went to various auto parts stores, I cannot find the proper air conditioning kit to put freon in. The port on my car is the opposite of what the universal one sold in the store connects to; the store clerk, who seemed very knowledgeable, came out to my car and couldn't believe that it's the opposite as it should be! "Suzuki engine!" My dear father stated!

Hi there,

If this is a sweet smell I would say it's coolant, I would get a cooling system pressure test done next, if it is a foul smell, it can be mold and mildew building up in the ducts, if so check the A/C drain tube and treat the vents with a dedicated cleaner that you can purchase from most spare parts outlets.

TROUBLESHOOTING AIR CONDITIONING ODOR

If a vehicles air conditioner blows out air that smells like the inside of old gym sneaker when the A/C is turned on, microbes are growing on the evaporator. Mold likes damp, dark places. Bacteria can also thrive under such conditions. Besides smelling bad, it can be unhealthy to breathe (ever hear of Legionnaires Disease?).

To get rid of the unwanted organisms, various chemicals can be sprayed on the evaporator directly or through the blower ducts or air intake. Many replacement evaporators have a special chemical coating that inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria. The drainage tubes that carry condensation away from the evaporator should also be inspected and cleaned.
