2005 Chevy Tahoe cost to rebuild

Was driving and all of a sudden my speed dropped to 25 mph and my rpms were reving up switched to 3 gear same think switched to 2 gear and all was find could drive 35 mph at 2200 rpms. Took to Auto shop said hooked up to diagnostics found nothing wrong from a code and computer standpoint said probally internals. My question is is this right and they quoted me a price of 2950? Is that in the range?

3K is a bit high for me but again need to know what are they changing
I would seek another local opinion
as they can drive it and inspected for you
it does sound as an internal tranny failure
