Usually upon acceleration, but, not always, a loud "clanking" noise comes from the A/C compressor, only when the A/C is "on".

I have had some advice telling me to replace the compressor, other advice telling me it's low on freon. Any ideas?

Yeah your bearings are probably chewed up. Be carefull because you could be driving and all of a sudden it locks up, your belt will probably snap and you will be stranded, so for now I would either not run the a/c or replace it. And don't be scared to got to the bone yard(junk yard) and get one for cheap. Theres nothing wrong with them they just have some miles on em. I have one from five years ago and I bought it for twenty dollars, it was either that or pay 300.00 and no garauntee that something won't go bad with a new one. So really its up to you. Thats just my opinion. Times are too hard.
