My 02 Tahoe, 5.3L, has 138k miles and just started making a rattling noise from the catalytic converter on the passengers side. I took it to the local muffler shop and they said I had to replace the whole catalytic y pipe and it would run about $900.
When I checked with AutoZone they say they have replacement converters for $50 each for my year car. Can these be used? Is it safe to drive the car in its current condition?
Thanks.

As far as driving it, you could still drive it but after a while it will set a code and sometimes the cat from being broken sometimes can plug the exhaust.I would not use a $50 cat they would fit but there pure garbage, there nothing more than a hollow pipe. It will fix the rattle but they still set cat converter codes.I would go with the muffler shop or with an OEM cat, you get what you pay for. Post back with any other questions.
