Hello
Ever since I can remember the parking brake in my 01 Tahoe never worked. It basically goes all the way to the floor and does nothing in the way of braking the car. I occasionally tow a boat and I suspect not setting the brake during the launching incline and setting the trans. To "Park" caused transmissinsion failure and it needed replacing. When Im in park at an incline I have to really force the car out of park and it makes a loud clunk. I would like to get the parking brake working to offloaad the transmission. What could be wrong. Where do I start. Please help
regards

Uhh ill tell you that its normal if you park on a incline and you put it in park it will clunk like that.

Such as parking up close and on a parking stop and if you put it in park you have to jam it out.

To find out what is wrong with the parkbreak would be have someone push the pedal and you go under there and see if the cable is moving up to the equilizer.

Thanks for the reply. I need a few more details on the troubleshooting procedure please. You say have someone push the pedal and I should go WHERE and look to see WHAT moving. The equalizer? Whats that?

Im surprised I couldnt find a site that talked me throught the parking brake with pictures?
Thanks.

There should be a line running to your rear axcel, almost like a bike's brake line. Trace it to exposed metal, have someone push the brake and see if it moves.

Ahh, kevin has it pretty much described there.

Equilizer is the thing that equilizles the pressure from the one line to the two brake lines. Basiclaly where the one line from the parking brake splits into two.
