The service 4wd light comes on intermittently and when it does can not shift out of 2wd. Is this a vacuum switch or encoder problem? Where do I begin

What I recommend is having the computer scanned to determine where the problem is coming from. It could be an electrical or vacuum problem. Most parts stores will scan for free.
