Well the tranny seemed great when I bought this Tahoe about a year ago, but a couple weeks ago, I lost Reverse, Second Gear and Overdrive.

Is this a common problem? Would a rebuild kit take care of it? And is it possible for an average mechanic to rebuild a tranny?

I looked at the rebuild kits and they look pretty complex, but Im told this is a fairly simple tranny.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the process of pulling the trans on a 99 because of similar issues. I believe the issues are caused by failure of the sunshelll carrier, which isnt too complicated to replace. If I remember right, my dad (a heavy equip. Mechanic) replaced the same part in a 96 tahoe with no problems. I would try replacing this before getting too involved in rebuilding the whole trans. Could save you a lot of time and money. This is a common problem with tahoes/ suburbans.
