I've got worn out front wheel bearings so I went to my local parts house and got a set of bearings and seals thinking it would be a simple job. Upon taking it apart it's obvious that it's not built the way they used to be. Instead of a nut holding the hub onto the spindle there's what I assume would be called a "hub assembly" with the words "WARNING DO NOT OPEN NOT SERVICABLE" printed on the back. My question is.I've got bearings and seals for *something*. Supposed to be a '00 Tahoe 2WD. Is this thing truly not servicable? If it is then what's the easy way to get the dust cap off the back without messing it up? And if it really isn't servicable then. In the kindest words I can muster. What a stupid idea (for the end user anyway.I'm sure it's great for the parts department). And one more question. If it isn't servicable then why is is so easy to get bearings and seals to fit it? I've tried several places and it's easy to come up with a set of good old fashioned bearings and seals.

I believe 2000 was a cross-over year, so they will list parts for both new and old body style trucks.I agree its not the best way to do it, but they are fairly simple to replace and alot cleaner of a job. LOL
BTW. The big shiny wheels, 18" and over will prematurely wear out the bearings

No big wheels for me. Just a lot of miles. I was able to find the hubs locally for $140 each. Makes me feel better than the $239 the dealer wanted. Plus, I am kinda looking forward to the relative cleanliness of the job. But, still. Would rather be a little greasy and save roughly $200. Oh well. Any idea as to what the hub assembly bolts should be torqued to?
