I HAVE A '96 CHEVY SUBURBAN WITH 157K ON IT. MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT USED TO STAY ON, NOW IT BLINKS CONSTANTLY. IT'S ALSO LACKING POWER/HESITATING WHEN I PULL OFF FROM A STOP. BUT WHEN I RUN IT FOR A LITTLE WHILE IT STARTS TO LACK POWER AND I GET A FUNNY SMELL FROM MY UNDERCARRIAGE. I BROUGHT IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY SAID 1 OF MY CYLINDERS WAS MISFIRING/ MAYBE MY (CAT) NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. PLEASE HELP WITH THIS SITUATION.

Sounds like the cat is clogged. When you drive the vehicle have you noticed ther coverter getting really hot? With it cool tape on the outside and listen for any rattling sounds. If you do then it is the coverter.
When the coverter goes bad it gets clogged up and reduces performance
