I took car to auto zone and their code stated that I may have a shift solenoid failure. how much does this type of repair cost and what exactly does a shift solenoid do? is it part of the engine or transmission? thank you for your time

The shift solenoids provides the upshift/downshifts/overdrive of the transmission it depends what shifting solenoid is malfunctioning and location for the costs of repairs needed as far as labor/parts concerned
