'89 chevy c2500, 2wd, 200,000+, 3 speed automatic, 5.7 liter, am getting a growling or howling from underneath somewhere, while driving, not so much while idling or idling in gear, most of the time while taking off, it doesnt seem to want to go, and sounds like engine is over-reving before it kicks, when you do get to "drive" 40 mph is the best you get, and noise is louder, sometimes there are no problems or noise and drives normal, 50-60 mph, then will act up again, changed fluid, filter and gasket on tranny in august, was fine for a few days, now is worse than ever, and fluid does not look foamy or burnt. $700 for rebuild, cant afford this or the shop at this time, could it be the torque converter or is it the tranny, or something on rear of engine, rest of engine is fine(idle-revs) while parked.

Just wanted to let all know about my problem, there is a few others out here with the same type of noise, but we got no responses, not sure what the problem is yet, but, 2 weeks ago my muffler fell off the truck and havent been able to find a replacement yet, but we noticed that the noise is gone, and we could only do 40-45 mph, but now the truck will go 70 without any problems, so now I am just wondering if the muffler was clogged up and having too much back pressure, hope this helps out all with same problem, or at least try and take off muffler to see if this helps out.
