Oil cooler line

I have a 96 silverado /v8/4x4/150,000klms.(Canadian)
I was just driving and the oil pressure gage started acting weird going up& down, the truck started chugging along.
i pulled into a canadian tire service & repair shop & asked them to take a look.
I had put 3 liters of oil in it within 5 minutes. It was blowing it out-while driving. Just driping while ideling
i knew it was the oil cooler, or the line
i do repairs myself and am very fussy in that respect.
But I was at the mercy of this kid.
I asked the young so-called mechanic to just put a
(by-pass hose ) on it to get me home.
I knew he had no idea what I ws talking about. He said no he wouldn't do it, because he'd be responsible if something happened.
we argued almost 3 hours, while
he poked &pulled & shampooed the engine, there was no oil left in the truck. It had poured out in the shop.I had no choice but to sign for the new part.
because he figured I didn't know what I ws talking about.
i have put by-pass lines on vehicles(I ran a service station for 10 yrs & I was my own mechanic.
Apparently they don't teach this in mechanic school.

well now I'm fighting to be reimburst for part of the $500.00 that it cost me. They seem to think he should be allowed to do what he wants in the wway of repairs, and I feel it's my truck & he should have done as I asked.
I need some one to agree with me as to this would be OK. That the oil cooler is mostly for hawling etc.
and not a saftey factor.
The truck has never been used off road nor did it ever hawl anything, although it is equipted to use a salter, plow etc. I do believe there are 2 coolers on this truck. Also the 4 wheel drive doesn't work & the truck was going to be laid up for the winter.I've owned it now for 8-9 years & don't drive it much as it's a gas eater. So I felt the new part was not necessary :x
If you would be so kind to give me some information on this subject and wether you agree or not, or have heard of a by-pass line instad of factory equiptment.
I would be greatly appreciative peggy

My 2 cents.

The line probably could have been temporarily repaired until you got it home. Bypassing a cooler is a risky issue. I didn't see it, so this may not be true as to what could or could not have been done.

I don't know the specifics of how the law works where your at, but The law in NY makes you very conscious of liability, and we have turned down work that we were concerned with potential liability, regardless of if we thought it would be fine to do.

You did have a choice in the matter but gave permisson for the repair. There was the option of towing. Your consent overrides a refund.
