Is it a clunk that can be felt in the steering wheel? If so it sounds like the intermediate steering shaft needs to be replaced. Gm redesigned these shafts to be less prone to making this noise.

I should have been more specific. The clunk sounds like it comes from the rear end like slack is taken up in the drive shaft to rear axle area. I have heard of others discribe as "axle slap", and still others say its in the transmission but noise comes from the rear axle. Any ideas?

Sorry so long getting back to you. The noise you are hearing may be from to exessive backlash. If you are ceratin its coming from the rear differential I would pull the rear cover off and use a dial indicator to check backlash should be more than.004
