2002 Chevy Silverado Catalytic Converter

My truck has a popping (exsplosion?) Noise, that can be heard for several hours after driving it. I have never had a code, and if anything have an increase in performance. I currantly get 19.6 MPG on the Highway. Is this popping noise dangerous, or is it nothing to worry about?
