I made a rookie mistake and forgot to check to make sure the old oil filter gasket was removed with the filter when changing my oil today. Buttoned everything back up with new filter and oil (but unbeknownst to me, with a double gasket) and you guessed it, the oil all leaked out upon starting the engine. It only ran a short period before I realized something wasn't right, but I did hear a pinging noise. I replaced the filter (one gasket this time) and refilled the oil. Started it up and the pinging was there initially, but did go away after a short while of idling. I've driven it a few miles and everything seems fine and no more pinging noise. Did I get lucky or do I need to have it checked out?

Hi jcd132,

If no abnormal noises are present, I would say you were lucky to have noticed the error in time.

Unless any abnormal pinging/knocking noise are present, especially during acceleration, there is nothing you need to worry about.

To check means to remove the oil sump and the journal bearings for inspection, because that is where the wear would be most likely to be affected first.
