2000 Chevy Silverado battery

I have 2 battery compartments one on each side with only one battery installed the other one has cables which are taped up with one wire going to solinoid and the other to the starter what is second one for should I install a battery there

The other side is your auxilliary to power additional loads, if it was me I'll put a battery there-for back-up on the starting system. Never know when its needed.
