Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
1996 Chevy Silverado V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My husband just replaced the bearings in the rear differential, but did not replace the shims. He drove it and it makes a noise when he turns to the right( it has now been parked since), how bad could this have damaged the rear end when he drove it without replacing them? We have heard that if he drove it slow it would be fine, and other people said if he drives at all it could tear up the gears.

Hello and thanks for donating

The sound may be from not replacing the shims, not necessarily permanent damage. The only way to know for sure though is to install the shims correctly then test drive it. If it still makes the same noise then there may be damage. If it wasn't driven very far (just a few miles) and at slower speeds than there shouldn't be a problem. If it was driven for awhile than it could have damaged the U joints though. Will really just have to replace shims and test drive it.
