Mine is a 2500. I put the truck in 4wd by the floor shifter into 4L (granny) it goes in easy, and the 4wd works great in 2H and 4H. In 4L it performs properly, but it is very difficult to get it back into 2H. I can pull it out of 4L easy enough, but getting into 2H, it grinds and makes an awful gear noise. I don't know if I'm supposed to put it in "Park, " "Neutral, " or can do it "On the fly". I have to let it roll a little then it it will intermittently go back into 2H. What am I doing wrong? Is it a fluid issue? I just replaced the front actuator 2 seasons ago.

Put your foot on the brake so the truck can't move. Place it in park and then shift. Keep your foot on the brake so the truck's weight can't rest on the trans.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks! I'm going wood cutting on Sunday and will be using the 4wd again hopefully with a full load of wood. I'll let you know how it turned out- whether I can get it out of granny gearand back into 2H easy enough. It sure helps using the granny gear coming down out of the mountains- it uses a lot less brake pad, and keep the smell down.
I went camping to Dworshak Resevoir in North central Idaho. THey have a 10% grade going down into the campground. It is sure scary going down that steep and wondering if yer brakes are going to fail. The ranger says almost everyone comes down the hill with brakes smoking- me included- until this year, I put it in granny gear and hardly tapped on the brakes. It was a lot less nerve wracking. Thanks for the tip- will let you know!

I hope it helps. The grinding you hear is the trans is still spinning when in gear or neutral and the transfer case gears are stopped. When you put it in park, if forces the trans to stop.

Let me know.

Also with these make sure when you switch gears from 4h 4l or 2h it is 1 movement do not stop in 1 to go to the next
